The institutes and units regularly evaluate their research. The research evaluation consists of two parts: a) a quantitative and b) a qualitative evaluation.
a) The quantitative research evaluation serves the purpose of quality assurance. It is carried out annually on the basis of data collected by the Vice-Rectorate for Research, including data from BORIS, and is automatically submitted to the institutes for their comments. So far, it includes the publication output ('efficiency'), the acquisition of third-party funding ('relevance') and the number of completed doctorates and habilitations ('training of young researchers'). The procedure and the content requirements are regulated in the QSE guidelines for the university core tasks § 3.2 (in German only) .
b) The qualitative research evaluation primarily serves quality development. It consists of a self-assessment by the evaluated unit on the one hand and an external assessment by peers on the other and is carried out every 7-8 years. The focus is on determining the status quo on the basis of the indicators issued by the faculty. In addition to the data from the quantitative research evaluations, the research data 'Excel sheet', which is updated annually, can be used for this purpose and lists, among other things, collaborations, networks, activities and services.
